RGGO stands for Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin. These certificates provide verified proof that gas has been produced from renewable sources. They are issued on a one-to-one basis, with 1 MWh of renewable gas equating to 1 RGGO certificate.
Renewable gas sources include biomethane and anaerobic digestion. RGGOs are purchased by suppliers and traders through our transparent auction process, supporting sustainability claims and compliance requirements.
Our RGGO auction is one of our most recent auctions launches and became a permanent feature of our calendar in 2025 following a number of successful auctions.
Ahead of each auction round, you will be invited to enrol, giving you access to a wide network of UK renewable generators offering RGGOs. Our platform brings together electricity producers and certificate buyers in a single, transparent trading environment.
Once registered, you will be issued secure login details that allow you to enter the auction system and view the RGGO volumes and generating sites available for purchase.
When the auction opens, you can place bids on RGGOs from individual renewable projects. This allows you to build a portfolio of certificates that aligns with your electricity supply, sustainability targets, or reporting requirements.
Bidding opens once the auction goes live at 10am on the day of the auction. The bidding window lasts 30 minutes, and if no higher bids are placed, the lot will be awarded. In cases of high competitive bidding, the auction may roll over into the following day. The auction will close once no further bids are received.
If you secure RGGOs in an auction, you will receive a single invoice covering the full value of all successful lots. Once payment has been received, the certificates will be transferred to you
We manage the commercial and administrative relationship with all participating generators, so you only need to deal with a single counterparty through our platform.

To get started, you simply enter into our Agency Agreement, which authorises us to market your RGGOs. Before each auction, we contact you to confirm the volumes you wish to put forward for sale.
Your RGGOs are transferred electronically to our Ofgem account, ready to be listed in the auction, and a reserve price is agreed with you in advance. RGGOs can be sold for current and previous production periods, subject to Ofgem rules.
Buyers review the available certificates and place bids through the online auction platform. Once your RGGOs are successfully sold, we collect payment from the buyer and settle with you, typically within around seven days of the auction closing. You do not need to manage multiple counterparties as we handle the full sales and settlement process for you.
If you operate a renewable gas production site, you can generate additional revenue by selling the RGGOs linked to your biomethane output. Energy suppliers and organisations purchase these certificates to support green gas tariffs and sustainability reporting.
