City of Wolverhampton Council Awards e-POWER Two-Year Contract

1 March 2024

We are delighted to announce that after a competitive tendering process City of Wolverhampton Council has appointed e-POWER to manage its export power contract for its EfW site for the next two years. The plant, operating since 1998, is able to incinerate circa 100,000 tonnes of waste a year with an installed capacity of 9.7 MW generating annually approximately 30,000 MWhs which would be about enough electricity to power 7,000 homes for a year.

John Roseblade, director of resident services at City of Wolverhampton Council, said - 'When we took back over the running of the plant last year, we were determined to ensure we were getting the best price for the electricity exported to the grid from our plant. The tendering process clearly concluded that e-POWER's competitive and transparent online auction, backed up by a very knowledgeable team operating robust processes was the best way to achieve this.'

Stuart Stephens MD of e-POWER responded - 'We are so pleased to be working with the team at City of Wolverhampton Council. We've had a lot of experience over the years selling the power on our auction platform from large EfW plants and in fact right now we are doing this for six EfW sites amounting to some 100MW of installed capacity.'

Cornwall Insight Analysis of e-POWER auction - '55 PPAs auctioned by e-POWER attracting close to 700 bids!'

20 June 2023

Cornwall Insight have just completed some independent analysis on our e-POWER auction platform. We are the only auction/exchange to open 'our books' to outside independent scrutiny and firmly believe that transparency and simplicity in our auction process produces the best outcomes for buyers and sellers in the PPA market. Our service is also backed up by the industry accepted e-POWER PPA and full billing and settlement for buyers and sellers.

Here is the report. We have further auctions on July 5th and September 20th . Please contact us for more details.

e-REGO Results

12 May 2023

Hot off the press we had our latest e-REGO auction on 11th May and it was the first visibility on CP22 pricing for April 23 generated REGOs.

Within 10 minutes we'd had over 1k bids increasing to a total of over 3k by the end of the auction from 11 different bidders. Therefore it was no surprise that REGOs hit their highest price ever on the e-REGO auction platform for CP22 REGOs!

Please see all our results here.

Our next e-REGO auction will be on 1st June.

e-REGO Results

17 November 2022

Bidding was again highly competitive in today's e-REGO auction with close to 6,000 bids from 12 different companies.

This competitive tension helped to push certificate prices up by more than £2.00 since our last auction in September, almost reaching £7.00 for wind and PV REGOs and £5.30 for base load REGOs.

REGO prices stay steady

18 July 2022

e-POWER held its sixteenth e-REGO auction on July 12th . Prices have improved quite a bit since our first e-REGO auction back in May 2019 when average prices were just 20p a REGO; in stark contrast to the highest prices of £7.15 on the auction platform in February 2022.

Our latest auction was for CP21 REGOs (April 22 to March 23 generation) and the prices have been relatively stable, this being the third auction for CP21. Baseload REGOs, for example, increased by about 10% to range from £3.26 to £3.55.

For comparison purposes the closest e-REGO auction for CP20 REGOs was in October 2021 when prices were about £1.00 lower than in our latest CP21 auction.

However, it will be easier to compare prices to last year at our next e-REGO auction on 15th September. Going forward we plan to run our e-REGO auctions every other month.

Cornwall Insight Analysis of e-POWER auction - 'highest ever values achieved'

16 February 2022

We are delighted to share with you some independent analysis that Cornwall Insight has done on our e-POWER auction platform. We are the only auction/exchange to open 'our books' to outside scrutiny and firmly believe that transparency and simplicity in our auction process produces the best outcomes for buyers and sellers in the PPA market.

As you might expect in the current market Cornwall Insight has highlighted that the prices achieved in the January 2022 e-POWER auction are the highest ever since they began their yearly analysis of our results back in 2013.

Please find the full report here.

Record Breaking e-REGO Prices!

11 February 2022

Amazing results from this week's e-REGO auction with prices hitting £7.15 for 'deep green' REGOs and over £5.00 for fuelled ones. Prices continued to rise from the last auction held in December and full results can be seen on the e-REGO track record here.

Prices seem to be on an upward trend, with an increasing number of REGOs required to support more domestic and business green electricity tariffs as well as large corporates using REGOs as part of their ESG reporting.

And, of course, helping to drive prices higher is the inbuilt competitiveness of a proven on-line auction model from e-POWER. 13 active bidders helped make this the longest e-REGO auction ever held, with 6,500 bids.

Our next e-REGO auction will be on Thursday 7th April 2022, please follow this link for details on how to buy or sell in e-REGO.

Record Breaking e-REGO Auction!

16 December 2021

Stretching across three days, our e-REGO auction achieved an average of £6.20 for 'deep green' REGOs and £4.25 for fuelled ones. This doubled the values seen in our last auction in October. Full results can be seen on the e-REGO track record here.

15 active bidders helped make this the longest e-REGO auction ever held, with over 3500 bids!

Our next e-REGO auction will be on Wednesday 9th February 2021, please follow this link for details on how to buy or sell in e-REGO.

Happy Christmas!

e-REGO auction prices reach £3.00 per certificate

8 October 2021

This week saw the completion of the first e-REGO auction for April 2021 onward certificates. Prices for deep green certificates reached £3.00 per certificate, with fuelled REGO certificates averaging £2.10 per certificate.

Buyer demand was high, with over 20 buyers logging on to the auction site and placing over 5,300 bids. The auction is continuing to develop and is an ideal opportunity for generators to maximise value from their REGOS.

Historic auction prices can be viewed here.

Our next e-REGO auction will be held on Thursday 9th December 2021.

e-ROC Auction Update

1 October 2021

We're celebrating three significant numbers from our e-ROC auction this week:

  1. Achieving the highest ever ROC price, comfortably exceeding the £55.60 from Feb 2020
  2. Reaching 18m ROCs sold on e-ROC since our first one in October 2002; therefore
  3. Selling c. £900m worth of ROCs

High Demand for Deep Green Certificates

10 May 2021

On Thursday 6th May we held an action-packed e-REGO auction, with over 3,500 bids pushing prices up to 71p per certificate.

REGOs (relating to April 2020 - March 2021) from all technologies were sold, however there was huge demand for "Deep Green" certificates (PV, Hydro and Wind) where the auction process pushed prices up to an average of 70p. We understand that bilateral deals prior to the auction had been resulting in prices around the 30p mark. This significant price increase demonstrates that the well-established e-POWER auction models deliver the best market price on the day.

It is hoped that the e-REGO auctions will help continue to develop a market for REGOs, therefore maximising the value for generators. The next auction will be held on Tuesday 5th October 2021.

In order to buy or sell REGOs (or ROCs) in our auctions you will need to complete an agency agreement and to you can view recent REGO prices here.

e-POWER Update

01 March 2021

Building on its largest ever auction in January, when some 82 PPAs were executed on the e-POWER auction, e-POWER held another auction for 23 PPAs starting on February 24th. The assets were across all technologies including wind, PV, hydro, AD, Biomass and LFG.

Interestingly, generators that had looked at re-fixing their PPAs earlier in the month when power prices were higher actually ended up achieving more by waiting for the monthly e-POWER auction.

For example, one seller had offers on three of their sites in mid-Feb when power prices spiked but decided to hold off fixing, until the e-POWER auction. They've let us know that they are very pleased at waiting as their sites received over 40 bids between them and the prices achieved were up to 5% higher than the earlier offers in February.

What is really different with the e-POWER auction, compared with exchanges or brokers, is not some fancy technology but that it replicates a real live auction room with one simple objective - to push the price as high as it will go.

As a bidder you can see the live bids coming in and know immediately when you have been outbid. In contrast to the traditional tender process, or more passive 'price taking' on-line digital 'bulletin board'/exchange platforms, this allows bidders to constantly reassess their position. This creates all the competitiveness that you would expect if you were in that auction room, pushing prices up to, and often beyond, market expectations!

Also, unlike some other platforms, with e-POWER you can pick in advance who can bid on your site and then have absolute certainty that, providing your reserve price is met, all parties are legally bound into the e-POWER PPA so you know the deal will hold.

Our next e-POWER auction is on March 24th. Please get in touch for details.

e-REGO Auction Results

11 February 2021

e-POWER ran another e-REGO auction on Tuesday 9th February. Although the total number of REGOs sold was relatively low, there were still over 1,000 bids and REGOs from numerous sellers were awarded to four winning bidders.

Results of the e-REGO auction may be viewed here.

The next e-REGO auction will be held on Thursday 6th May and will be the final auction for sellers and buyers to trade CP19 REGOs prior to the Ofgem deadline of 1st July 2021.

e-POWER Update - Largest ever Auction !

4 February 2021

We have just held our largest on-line e-POWER auction to date, selling 82 short term PPAs to the highest bidders. This auction built on several others run throughout autumn 2020 for another 51 PPAs. In total, these e-POWER auctions represent close to 500MW of installed capacity.

The January auction ran for three days, starting on January 27th, and during that time 1724 bids were placed by eight different bidders. The bidding hours were 10am to 5pm so the bidders did get some rest!

Bidders (mainly GB electricity suppliers) like the convenience of being able to acquire multiple PPAs all on one platform, whilst generators like the liquidity that the on-line auction brings with numerous bidders having the chance to fight it out, with ever increasing bids, in a live auction environment.

Here's some feedback from happy sellers in last week's auction -

"I work with a number of generators across all technologies and I've been using the e-POWER auction for over 5 years now. I particularly like the reassurance that lots of bidders take part every time a PPA comes up for renewal whilst the fact that e-POWER also look after all the billing really reduces the admin burden for my clients. In this auction I sold 20 PPAs on behalf of my clients and all of them are very pleased with the outcome. Some of the FIT generators now have e-POWER PPAs and can come off the lower government export FIT rate. One client in particular, who has quite tight loan finance in place, is now better off by quite a considerable margin. This has really taken the pressure off and will allow him to invest in other areas, plus his funder is happy too!"
Richard Adams, MD Richard Adams Associates Ltd.

"This is the first time we have sold any of our project PPAs on the e-POWER platform. Monitoring the live bids via the e-POWER viewing portal was a fascinating experience, attracting a surprisingly high level of interest from bidders. The auction for the two sites continued for three days, with almost 40 bids being received between them. The e-POWER auction is a refreshingly transparent process that allowed us to reach many quality bidders and hence achieve very competitive PPA prices. e-POWER has also provided additional services to us during the commissioning phase of new sites, facilitating PPAs in a timely and flexible structure to ensure the energisation process could take place on time."
Jolyon Ridgwell, Investment Manager , Blackfinch Energy

"We have been dealing with the same members of staff at e-POWER since the late 90s, which is a credit to the organisation. If we have any problems, the staff are always ready to give friendly helpful advice. In the latter years the auction process has evolved and as far as we are concerned works very well. We have full visibility of the organisations that will be bidding for our electricity and the result is always competitive. Unfortunately, many companies have become impersonal with verbal communication becoming a thing of the past. This is not the case with e-POWER, they thrive on direct contact, which is one of the main reasons we will continue to work with them".
Huw Smallwood , Owner , Tegni Ltd

Our next e-POWER auction will be on 24th February. Please contact us if you would like more information.

e-POWER Update

23 October 2020

It's been another busy week for the e-POWER team at 'full tilt' with auctions on four days out of five!

Our e-POWER auction ran across three days (Tuesday to Thursday) with 15 PPAs up for grabs across EfW, PV, Wind and AD adding up to close to 80MW of installed capacity. In all, 224 bids were placed by six different buyers.

Interestingly, the wholesale power element of the 12-month PPAs has held for the last couple of auctions now at circa £47/48 per MWh which is higher than the equivalent 12-month values of £45 per MWh back in July.

Some generators are therefore taking that as a positive signal to sell their April 1st 12-month PPAs. Our next e-POWER auction is on November 24th and following that on January 19th.

Today was our other busy auction day running the e-ROC auction. There was much greater bidder activity than we've previously seen for this compliance period (CP) with seven active buyers placing over 2000 bids and pushing CP19 ROC prices above £49.00 for the first time.

e-POWER Update

9 October 2020

October is proving to be a busy month for e-POWER, starting with our seventh e-REGO auction on Thursday 8th October. Although total number of REGOs sold remained relatively low, with just under 55k REGOs traded this time, we continued to see a high level of interest from both sellers and buyers. The October auction included REGOs from 17 different sellers, and REGOs were sold to 6 different buyers. Results of the e-REGO auction may be viewed here and we're pleased to announce that the date of the next e-REGO auction will be Tuesday 9th February 2021.

Later this month we will have our next e-POWER PPA auction, starting on Tuesday 20th October. This will then be followed by our e-ROC auction on Friday 23rd October. In these uncertain times our monthly e-ROC auctions continue to provide an easy route to market for sellers, with well over 100,000 ROCs selling in both the August and September auctions.

For more information on what we offer our PPA customers, please click here. If you are interested in buying or selling REGOs or ROCs in our auctions, please click here.

e-POWER Update

18 September 2020

It has been a busy few days with 30 PPAs representing over 100MW of installed capacity being auctioned on e-POWER across Wednesday and Thursday. Seven buyers took part placing almost 400 bids over the two days.

Most PPAs were from 1st October for either six or twelve months but several plants auctioned their 1st April 2021 twelve-month PPAs.

e-POWER July Update

31 July 2020

Following our large e-POWER auction for 46 PPAs in early July, Cornwall Insight have provided some excellent analysis on the performance of the auction. Their full report can be found here, but they particularly highlighted how the auction allowed sellers to take advantage of an increase in wholesale power prices - reflected in the higher than normal levels of bidding witnessed. This helped overcome some of the uncertainties arising as a result of COVID 19, although those PPAs including 2020/21 ROCs did see a greater impact on prices.

July has continued to be a busy month for e-POWER, with the first e-REGO and e-ROC auctions for this year's certificates. As demonstrated in the e-POWER auction, the demand for 2020/21 certificates is quite subdued due to the pandemic and resulting uncertainty about how may certificates will be required. This had a negative impact on values, with REGOs trading at around 20p and CP19 ROCs trading below the buy-out price of £50.05.

For more information, including how to buy and sell on our auction platforms, please get in touch.

Our next auction dates are as follows -

e-ROC - Friday, 28th August
e-POWER - Wednesday, 16th September
e-REGO - Thursday, 8th October

e-POWER auction 7th to 9th July

10 July 2020

e-POWER has just run one of its largest auctions; 46 PPAs from generators across wind, hydro, biomass, AD, EfW, PV and LFG received an average of 25 bids per site during the online auction. In all, over 100MW of power was sold for PPAs ranging from 6 to 14 months.

The competitive nature of the live auction was reflected in generators' benefitting from an uptick in wholesale power prices. This was coupled with buyer appetite for CP19 ROCs which formed part of the bid on most of the PPAs.

The next e-POWER auction will be on 16th September and there will also be an e-REGO auction on 16th July and e-ROC auction on 29th July.

e-POWER Update

24 April 2020

We had our second largest e-ROC auction ever on Thursday 23rd April. Over 300k ROC were sold with well in excess of 5000 bids received, resulting in ROC sales greater than ?15m. A big thanks to all the buyers and sellers who made that happen . Here at e-POWER we have built up the IT resilience and communication processes to ensure the smooth running of the auction while we are all working from home during these difficult times.

Corporate energy buyers can now bid and buy power on our e-POWER auction platform. This innovation will increase liquidity still further on our online auction, while allowing energy end users to buy power directly from renewable generators and helping them to fulfil their CSR objectives.

Importantly, unlike some other PPA services in the market, with the e-POWER business and auction model all parties have the absolute comfort and certainty that their e-POWER PPA is in force as soon as the auction concludes.

The dates of our upcoming auctions are -

e-REGO - Tuesday, 5th May
e-POWER - Tuesday, 19th May
e-ROC - Thursday, 21st May

e-POWER Business Continuity - COVID 19 Update

17 March 2020

We thought it important that, with the level of uncertainty created by the coronavirus pandemic, we should reassure you that e-POWER have a business continuity framework in place.

All planned auctions will run as scheduled and procedures are in place to avoid any disruption to timetabled billing and settlement dates. In the event that we need to close our office, our IT infrastructure allows the business to operate as normal with all staff having remote access to systems, emails and telephones.

Normal levels of customer service will continue whilst at the same time ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our staff.

76 short term PPAs secured through e-POWER auction

3 March 2020

Through its on line auctions in January and February e-POWER has secured 76 PPAs for generators and suppliers, representing almost 300MW of installed capacity. Generators across the whole spectrum were represented from a small 50kW Hydro plant to a large 40MW EfW facility. Across the two auctions generators had the flexibility to fix their PPA for 3, 6, 12 or 18 months.

All had one thing in common though; high levels of bidding from ten interested electricity suppliers. With wholesale power prices being at their lowest levels for several years the tension of a competitive auction for PPAs becomes even more important.

This is backed up by independent analysis by Cornwall Insight - The January 2020 e-POWER auction saw record value retention levels for generators.

Recently more generators have approached e-POWER requiring PPAs from 1st April and therefore a further auction will be held on 19th March.

Two Successful Renewable Certificate Auctions

4 February 2020

Last week saw the completion of two successful certificate auctions for e-POWER. The e-ROC auction was held on Tuesday 28th January with ROCs reaching a record high.

On Thursday 30th January we held the newly launched e-REGO auction selling almost 500,000 REGOs to 10 successful buyers. It is hoped that the e-REGO auctions will help continue to develop a market for REGOs, therefore maximising the value for generators. The auction returned an average price of 15p for Biomass REGOs and a higher average price of 26p for REGOs from Hydro, Solar and PV technologies.

In order to buy or sell REGOs or ROCs in our auctions, please click here.

Our next e-ROC auction will be held on Tuesday 25th February 2020 and the next e-REGO auction will be on Wednesday 11th March 2020.

REGO index price trial

12 November 2019

We are pleased to announce the date of our next e-REGO auction, which will be held on Thursday 30th January.

Following this auction we intend to trial releasing a published index price for REGOs. This is in response to requests from generators whose current PPAs have a provision to sell REGOs only where a published price is made available. It is hoped that this will help develop the market for REGOs, therefore maximising the value for these generators by allowing them to use the e-REGO auction to sell their REGOs.

The intention will be to publish two prices as REGOs from technologies such as PV, hydro and wind typically attract higher prices than REGOs from technologies such as landfill, MIW, biomass and biogas.

In order to buy or sell REGOs in our auction, please click here.

Record number of bids in e-POWER auction

23 September 2019

In all 15 sites were auctioned last week across AD, LFG, PV and Hydro technologies.

An average of 41 bids per site were made in the e-POWER auction. One site received an incredible 103 bids! Both this number of bids for an individual site and the average number of bids were e-POWER auction records.

Once again the high level of competitive bidding provides some comfort for generators who may be concerned about softer wholesale power prices but can be reassured that the e-POWER auction will squeeze out the best price for their PPA.

This was backed up by Cornwall Insight reporting on our July 2019 auction which saw the highest level ever reached for generator value retention in an e-POWER auction. You can download the report here.

Please remember our e-POWER auctions are held monthly giving you flexibility over when you choose to fix your PPA

Our upcoming monthly e-POWER auctions are on 15th October and 19th November.

Independent analysis by Cornwall Insight concludes that the e-POWER auction hit record levels in July 2019

20 August 2019

The latest report on the e-POWER auction from Cornwall Insight can be downloaded HERE

Our next auction is on 17th September for PPAs with the earliest start date of 1st October.

e-POWER update

22 July 2019

Our latest auction ran across three days from 9th to 11th July. In all, 39 generating sites representing close to 100MW of installed capacity were selling their power to the highest bidder. About half of the sites were also selling their ROCs, with both elements of the bid (power and ROCs) being built into a single bid price.

Many generators prefer selling their ROCs in this way as it means a considerable cash flow benefit as they are paid by the bidder (supplier) two months before the ROCs have even been issued by Ofgem.

As usual, there was a high level of bidding activity, with 10 successful bidders eventually winning the 39 sites after placing close to 850 bids during the auction.

e-POWER now has just over 150 generators selling their power (and ROCs) on the auction platform. Most PPAs tend to be for either 6 or 12 months.

Our next auction is on 17th September for PPAs with the earliest start date of 1st October.

e-ROC update

22 July 2019

Our next e-ROC auction is on 31st July and this will be the last chance for bidders (suppliers) to buy ROCs to meet their CP17 obligation. Unusually this auction in July will have ROCs to sell from three compliance periods; the last opportunity to sell CP16 ROCs (before they become valueless), CP17 ROCs and the first opportunity to sell CP18 ROCs generated in April 2019.

e-REGO update

22 July 2019

Following a successful inaugural e-REGO auction back in May another e-REGO auction will run on 10th September.

e-REGO Auction update

6 June 2019

We are pleased to confirm that we successfully held our first ever e-REGO auction on 23rd May. A total of 22 Sellers entered REGOs for sale and 29 parties registered to buy, with 11 eventually being awarded certificates.

A number of pricing trends were apparent in the auction. Certain technologies attracted a premium, selling nearly 40% higher than the auction average. Based on market information we had expected biomass to receive slightly lower prices and this was reflected in the auction results, with biomass selling c.20% lower than the average price. A small number of REGOs relating to April 2019 (CP18) were included in the auction and prices were, on average, double those for CP17.

Our next e-REGO auction will be on Tuesday, 10th September 2019. Click HERE for more information.

e-POWER auction update

5th March 2019

The latest Cornwall Insight analysis on e-POWER auctions is now available.

Please download the report HERE

Their headline comment on the results of the January 2019 - "The auction saw a new record high for value retention, increasing by three percentage points on average on the July 2018 auction. The average value share retained by generators was 106.8% against assessed post-auction maximum energy benchmark values, compared to 103.8% in the July 2018 auction."

The last e-POWER auction to secure a 1st April PPA, is on March 21st.

Record number of bids in e-POWER auction

29th January 2019

Beginning on Tuesday 22nd January and lasting for three and half days generators received an average of 30 bids from electricity suppliers seeking to win PPAs; the most competitive number of bids ever in an e-POWER auction.

In total power and ROCs from 52 generators was bid on by ten different electricity suppliers but the level of competition left four of the suppliers empty handed by the end of the auction process with PPAs being awarded to six different suppliers.

Most technologies were represented ; EfW, Biomass , AD, PV, wind, LFG and CHP and the majority of PPAs were for terms beginning on April 1st and running for either six or twelve months. There was an even spread across RO and FIT generators in this auction.

ROC prices over £54.00 in e-ROC auction

29th January 2019

The e-ROC auction has been providing a route to market for buyers and sellers since October 2002 and last week saw the highest ever prices in the e-ROC auction; with the average price hitting over £54.00 per ROC.

Almost 180,000 ROCs were sold with a record number of bids; 2555 in total.

The dates of the upcoming e-ROC auctions are:

28th February
21st March
24th April
23rd May
24th June

e-POWER Auction update

28th November 2018

We held our last auction on November 23rd; 26MW made up of seven sites across PV, AD, LFG and EfW were successfully auctioned. It was another busy auction with an average of 18 bids being received for each site from seven different bidders (suppliers), on this occasion. In the end the sites were won by 4 bidders.

PPA lengths varied from 1st December 2018 - 31st March 2019 to 1st April 2019 - 31st March 2020.

In our next auction on January 22nd we hope to have approximately 50 sites to auction.

The auction on Tuesday 23rd October continued the recent trend of generators selling their power for 12 month contracts starting on April 1st 2019. This time it was mainly the turn of the large base loaders with 8 sites representing some 53MW on offer.

Again, there was a high level of bidder activity with 11 suppliers taking part, 6 of them successful in winning assets.

The last auction for this calendar year will be on November 23rd.

e-ROC records a plenty!

25th October 2018

Our largest auction since July 2016 saw close to 200k ROCs sold achieving over ???53.00 a ROC, the highest price since July 2008!

The dates of the upcoming e-ROC auctions are:

23rd November

Increased interest in PPAs from April 1st 2019 in e-POWER auction

21st September 2018

Another very busy e-POWER auction with a record number of suppliers taking part in the e-POWER monthly auction.

10 suppliers were bidding in this auction and 17 assets (mainly PV) were on offer, representing some 90MW of power. 13 of the 17 were combined PPAs, also including the generators' ROCs. In total 379 bids were placed with 7 of the suppliers successful in winning assets and 3 going home empty handed on this occasion.

14 of the 17 PPAs were for 1st April 2019 start dates. This follows on from 6 1st April 2019 PPAs being sold in the August e-POWER auction. To put this in perspective the first April 2018 PPAs were not sold last year until the October auction (and then only 7 1st April 2018 start dates in total across October and November 2017 auctions).

It would seem that generators are keen to take advantage of current high wholesale power prices securing PPAs well in advance of their start date rather than the usual 1-2 months lead time.

The analysis seems to back up why generators have been auctioning early with a wholesale power price of ???60.27 for a 1st April 2019 12 month PPA at the time of our last auction on August 31st and ???62.91 in this auction. (This contrasts with prices on the same dates in August and September 2017 of ???44.06 and ???44.27 respectively for 1st April 2018 12 month PPAs)

Our upcoming e-POWER auctions are on 23rd October and 23rd November and although e-POWER cannot control the underlying wholesale power price what it can do is provide a very liquid market for generators to fix their PPA for the best price on the day of the auction.

Record levels of bidding in e-POWER auction

4th September 2018

A record number of bids per site were received in last week's e-POWER auction on August 30th and 31st. 405 bids across 15 auction lots equating to an average of 27 bids per site were made during this very busy auction.

Close to 70MW of installed capacity was sold across several technologies including; Landfill Gas, Energy from Waste, PV, Biomass, Wind and AD.

Some of the contracts had 1st October start dates but a number of generators had contacted us to auction their sites from 1st April 2019 to take advantage of current high wholesale electricity prices.

Please contact us if you want to enter our next e-POWER auction on September 20th.

e-POWER auction update

20th July 2018

The latest e-POWER auction took place across two days on 10th and 11th July and the high prices achieved were very much reflective of the current wholesale power market. Strong values in the auction were also helped by the large number of bids; an average of 21 per site. In fact a couple of sites received over 50 bids.

In total 56 sites were auctioned amounting to some 130MW of installed capacity across seven different technologies with sites varying in size from 50kW to 42MW.

The versatility of the e-POWER auction was demonstrated with this auction having the largest range of different contract periods including:

e-POWER auction

5th March 2018

Our latest e-POWER auction completed on Wednesday 28th February. 11 sites representing 38MW across hydro, biomass, AD and PV were won by 5 different suppliers. All the PPAs were for a 1st April start date with contract lengths varying from 2 through to 12 months.

For generators that still require a PPA from 1st April our March e-POWER auction has been pulled forward a few days and will now take place on 14th March.

Record number of bids in e-ROC auction

5th March 2018

This auction took place on Tuesday 27th February and set a new record for the number of bids placed in the e-ROC auction's 15 years history, almost 2000 bids. This helped achieve the highest price so far for CP16.

New record set in e-POWER auction

30th January 2018

Starting on 23rd January and lasting for three days, the largest e-POWER auction to date included a portfolio of 65 generators representing some 280MW of capacity. As usual bidding activity was high with an average of 16 bids per site, one Hydro site receiving a total of 50 bids!

Most technologies were represented; 22 wind, 8 Hydro, 5 Waste to Energy, 1 Biomass, 6 AD, 14 PV, 6 LFG, 1 CHP and 2 mixed tech (LFG and PV). 30 of the sites were for power only (of which 11 were FIT contracts), the other 35 were sold with ROCs. Contract lengths were split pretty evenly between 6 months and 12 months; all with PPA starting dates of 1st April.

Again, as in other recent e-POWER auctions it was noticeable that sites sold with ROCs were receiving quite up upside in values, indicative of bidders building in value for CP17 ROC recycle.

Cornwall Insight will be producing independent analysis of the results from this auction shortly.

The next e-POWER auction will be held on 27th February and it is worth noting that e-POWER not only auction the power for the generator but look after all billing and settlement requirements.

e-POWER - now auctioning enough renewable electricity to power every home in a city the size of Leeds !

22nd September 2017

Following the completion of this week's auction e-POWER passed an exciting milestone; e-POWER now has over 100 PPAs in place between generators and suppliers auctioned on the e-POWER platform. This is a fivefold increase in just three years and includes generators across all renewable technologies accounting for some 400MW of installed capacity, roughly 1.5 TWh of power and £80m of annual wholesale power.

To put that in perspective that is enough renewable electricity to provide power for approximately 300,000 homes; in fact roughly the number of homes in a city the size of Leeds!

Over the last few years many generators have voted with their feet to take part in the e-POWER auction process that ensures maximum exposure to and dynamic competition between a large number of suppliers for their generating asset. Conversely suppliers, both big and small, see e-POWER as a convenient route to acquiring generator output for their portfolio.

Specifically in Tuesday's auction 20 sites were sold representing some 40MW of power across six technologies, namely; Hydro, Wind, Biomass, AD, PV and LFG. Contract lengths varied from 2 through to 12 months and both RO and FIT sites were auctioned.

Bidding was intense with an average of 20 bids per site causing the auction to go into a second day on some of the sites; two LFG generators and one Hydro generator in Scotland attracted in excess of 50 bids each!

As in the last couple of e-POWER auctions it was the contracts sold with ROCs and power that received the largest number of bids, reflecting the higher ROC values forecasted for CP16 ROCs.

The next e-POWER auction is on 24th October for PPAs with the earliest start date of 1st November.

e-ROC auction for CP16 ROCs

28th July 2017

Today's e-ROC auction was the first time that CP16 ROCs were available for sale (ROCs generated in April 2017) and was the last auction for suppliers to buy ROCs to meet their CP15 obligation. The July auction is always an interesting one as it contains ROCs from three different compliance years. (On this occasion CPs 14,15 and 16). The average price achieved in the auction was ???48.39 (an average of the three CPs) and this was an increase of 54p on the month before. In terms of the spread CP14 ROCs sold for 2.1% less than CP16 and CP15 ROCs sold for 1.7% less than CP16.

We do not publish the actual average value by CP but are happy to provide more detailed information for any current users of either of our platforms; e-POWER and e-ROC.

In total 128,903 ROCs were sold which is over 60% up on last month.

Record 200MW of PPAs auctioned

17th July 2017

43 sites representing some 200MW of installed power and renewable benefits have been successfully auctioned during the latest e-POWER auction running over three days from Tuesday 11th July to Friday 14th July. The auction also included the last 15 legacy NFFO contracts.

In a highly competitive auction 19 electricity suppliers took part with an average of 19 bids being received for each site. One hydro site received 50 bids!

Baseload generators and sites that sold their ROCs as part of their PPA did particularly well (implying that bidders were building in higher values for CP16 ROCs)

Most technologies were represented consisting of 20 Wind, 7 Hydro, 4 EfW, 1 Biomass, 9 PV, 14 LFG and 3 mixed technology sites.

The contract PPA lengths varied from 3 mths through to 12 mths.

The next e-POWER auction will be on Tuesday 19th September 2017.

30th May 2017

An auction lasting two days (25th and 26th May) has sold 77MW of installed capacity across some 16 assets comprising several technologies; PV, AD, CHP and Hydro. Both FIT and RO sites were represented and contract lengths varied from 3 to 12 months.

Most noticeable was the high prices and the number of bids (an average of 16) on the RO sites which is perhaps reflective of the under supply in the current ROC market.

The next e-POWER auction is on Tuesday 11th July and the deadline for registering your site for this auction is Tuesday 27th June.

Over 1/4 million ROCs sold in latest e-ROC auction

29th July 2016

The July auction is always a bit different with ROCs for sale from three compliance years; CP13 ROCs that are very close to their 'sell by' date, CP14 ROCs and the first batch of CP15 ROCs from April 2016 generation. As expected bidder interest was high with just under 1200 bids placed by 10 suppliers in today's auction, the second largest number of bids in 12 months.

257,927 ROCs were sold. The average price was ???41.65 up 30p on last month. As you would expect CP13 ROCs sold at a small discount to this average. CP14 and CP15 ROCs sold at almost the same price reflective of the buy-out prices for both years being very similar and the oversupply in CP14 pushing through to CP15.

The dates of the upcoming e-ROC auctions are:

Largest ever e-ROC auction pushes e-ROC past the 10 million milestone!

Today witnessed the largest ever e-ROC auction with 256,344 ROCs sold. This resulted in a major milestone being achieved with over 10 million ROCs having been sold on the platform since the first auction way back in October 2002. At that time the auction was only run quarterly. e-ROC moved to monthly auctions in 2010 with average volumes of 50,000 ROCs being sold each month. Over the last year monthly volumes sold in the auction have increased to an average of over 125,000 ROCs per month.

A record number of electricity suppliers took part again today with bids being made by 15 suppliers. With continued over supply of ROCs for CP14 the average price in the auction was ???41.66, down 15p on last month.

28th April 2016

e-POWER monthly auction

The auction held on 27th April attracted a lot of bidding with the sites sold achieving 97% of the full market value. This month's online e-POWER auction allowed the generators to take advantage of the uptick in wholesale power prices over the last couple of weeks.

The next e-POWER auction will be on 25th May.

Record number of bidders in e-ROC auction

15 bidders took part in the 27th April e-ROC auction placing over 1500 bids. This is a record number of bids and bidders, because in addition to the usual electricity suppliers a sizeable number of smaller suppliers also used the auction to meet their CP14 ROC obligation.

148,402 ROCs were sold, a little down on last month but more than double the number in the same month last year. Despite continued over supply of CP14 ROCs the average price from the auction held up quite well, down only 12p from last month to ???41.81.

e-POWER and e-ROC AUCTION RESULTS

24th March 2016

e-POWER monthly auction

This auction was re-arranged for 17th March 2016 to take account of generators requiring PPAs from 1st April 2016. Prices were a little lower than the January and February e-POWER auctions due to increased uncertainty regarding future ROC prices. (more detail below on ROC forecasts).

Over 150k ROCs sold in e-ROC auction

A larger number of bidders than usual took part; ten suppliers placed close to 600 bids resulting in the sale of 153,664 ROCs. This volume is down a little on last month but up almost 100k on the same month last year. The average price was ???41.93 per ROC, down 26p on last month; a smaller fall than might be suggested by current market conditions of heavy oversupply for CP14 which may also feed through to CP15.

Forecasters have recently pointed to a circa 3.5 million increase in ROC supply from Drax and a 3 to 3.5 million ROC oversupply from offshore wind caused by November 2015 to February 2016 having the highest ever recorded load factors - December 2015 alone was 68%!

The dates of the upcoming e-POWER and e-ROC auctions are:

27 April 2016
25 May 2016

Cornwall Energy analysis of January 2016

e-POWER auction results

Cornwall Energy Headline Comments

1 March 2016

The January 2016 auction saw the largest ever capacity of commercial sites auctioned.

This auction also exhibited new trends; sharp reductions in wholesale prices have incentivised generators to choose different contract lengths in the auction, based on their view of future prices. New contract lengths indicate the flexibility demanded by generators, a trend increasing in the market with recent policy and market changes.

Cornwall Energy analysis of monthly e-POWER auctions

Cornwall Energy Headline Comments

15 January 2016

Overall, analysis shows that monthly e-POWER auctions have shown consistent value retention against maximum market benchmarks, both before and after the removal of Lecs as a value source.

Average value retention of 98.9%, a rise on previous averages seen in seasonal e-POWER auctions, is indicative of wider trends in the short-term PPA market with competition increasing value retention achieved by generators.

Performance of sites in the monthly e-POWER auctions showed that value shares retained by generators are towards the upper end when compared with those, that we are aware of, being achieved in other routes to market.

Cornwall Energy analysis of summer 2015
e-POWER auction results

Cornwall Energy Headline Comments

26 February 2015

The summer 15 auction set a new record for the number of commercial projects auctioned. Increased interest from generators can be seen as indicative of expectations of good balance of cost and benefits in the auction compared with other offtake options and of the increasing number of projects coming to market under the RO and FiT schemes.

Performance of commercial sites in the auction showed that value shares retained by generators through the e-POWER auction are towards the upper end when compared with those, that we are aware of, being achieved in other routes to market. The presence of new 12-month contracts in the auction is also likely to be attractive for generators looking for longer-term pricing certainty.

e-POWER - 100 sites auctioned!

29 January 2015

The latest online e-POWER auction for renewable electricity was completed on 28 January 2015 for a mixture of statutory NFFO contracts and commercial PPAs. Most technologies and various capacities of plant were represented ranging from 22kW to over 50MW in size. The majority of the contracts are for the Summer 2015 period, although several are for the twelve months beginning April 2015.

19 electricity suppliers took part in the e-POWER auction and bidding activity was high with an average of 11 bids per site. Most of the renewable generators are under the RO and the prices bid are inclusive of the ROC which is of considerable cash flow benefit as the generator receives payment for the ROCs two months before they are issued by Ofgem.

The exported power from several FIT sites was also auctioned.

The average prices by technology for the commercial generators are shown below:

Technology Band Average Price £/MWh
Hydro £92.92 (1 ROC)
Landfill Gas £100.30 (1 ROC)
Wind £94.12 (1 ROC)
Biomass £118.90 (1.5 ROCs)
AD £140.93 (2 ROCs)
FIT sites (all techs) £52.14 (power/ 1 LEC)
Energy from Waste £50.55 (power / half LEC)

Over 80k ROCs auctioned

In addition the scheduled e-ROC monthly auction took place on Monday 26th January 2015 and 84,372 ROCs were sold, an increase in volume of 20% from the December 2014 auction and almost 13% up on January last year. The average price was ???43.13 up 47p from last month. Bidding activity was more than double that of last month at 813 bids.

The next e-POWER and e-ROC auctions are on Wednesday 25th February 2015.

e-POWER - 80MW of Power Auctioned

28 November 2014

Over the last few months 18 sites have been auctioned on the e-POWER auction platform. These auctions are in addition to the normal January and July auctions for summer and winter power. Usually held on the same day as the monthly e-ROC auction they are a convenient way for suppliers to buy power.

Importantly the increased frequency of e-POWER auctions gives generators greater flexibility on when to sell their power and the PPA contract length. The sites across all technologies have been competitively fought over with FIT sites typically achieving over ???60.00 per MWh , 1 ROC banded sites over ???100.00 per MWh and 2 ROC banded sites over ???140.00 per MWh.

I am delighted with the results. I will share this with my team and we will look at recommending your services for other sites in the future .We are installing about 50MWp of PV in the next 12 months and have an existing customer base of circa 10MWp.

Julian Patrick CEO Freewatt Group

I'm very pleased with the results from e-POWER, the monthly auctions are creating a real market to come to. I decided I wanted to sell now my summer 15 and winter 15/16 power and the e-POWER auction has done just that achieving better prices than the traditional bi-lateral/tender approach for PPAs.

Andy Leach MD Renewable Power Systems

The next e-POWER auction is on Tuesday 27th January 2015

e-ROC - Little change in ROC prices

28 November 2014

The scheduled e-ROC monthly auction took place on Thursday 27th November 2014 and 58,744 ROCs were sold. Approximately 57,000 ROCs were left unsold having not met their reserve price.

The average price was ???42.47 up just 2p from last month.

The dates of the upcoming e-ROC auctions are:

Monday 22nd December 2014
Monday 26th January 2015
Wednesday 25th February 2015
Wednesday 25th March 2015

Cornwall Energy analysis of winter 2014
e-POWER auction results

Cornwall Energy Headline Comments

4 September 2014

'Overall, the winter 2014-15 auction continued to show high levels of demand from suppliers, evidenced by the 20 participants in the auction and 13 bids per contract. An increasing number of suppliers are entering in the e-POWER auction as it a simple and cost-effective route to green power compared with other options, including trading platforms.

Performance of commercial sites in the auction showed, like previous auctions, that shares retained by generators through the e-POWER auction are higher than can be achieved elsewhere. Value retention is up to 8pp higher than under a typical short-term (one to three year) PPA and up to 18pp higher than the terms offered under a long-term PPA. We believe e-POWER auctions could allow the greatest value to be retained by generators, as prices would be fixed amid the backdrop of falling wholesale power and Roc prices'

Feed-in Tariff generators to use e-POWER auctions

5 March 2014

In an important development for the e-POWER platform, NFPAS-Auctions is delighted to announce that generators under the Feed in Tariff (FIT) scheme can now also auction their export power. FIT generators that are half-hourly metered and over 30kW are able to opt out of the standard scheme fixed rate export tariff.

Via the e-POWER auction, it is estimated that these generators could receive in excess of £55 per MWh, a significant premium to the administered fixed rate. Another bonus is that although financiers of new FIT projects may require the security of a long term electricity off-take arrangement, they are usually able to provide finance off the FIT Generation tariff only. This allows the generator to take full advantage of the higher export prices available via e-POWER by opting out of the standard export tariff.

Our next e-POWER auction for Winter 2014/15 power is on 8th July 2014.

e-POWER auction results
Over 500 MW of power auctioned

30 January 2014

The latest on-line e-POWER auction of renewable electricity was completed on 29th January 2014.

A total of 105 generating sites representing some 510 MW of installed capacity were auctioned. These included an increasing proportion of sites being auctioned directly on behalf of independent generators as well as the statutory NFFO and SRO sites.

Commercial PPAs (outside of the statutory NFFO arrangements) now account for almost a third, 150 MW, of the contracts auctioned by e-POWER. This is made up of 115 MW from the latest auction as well as 35 MW that was auctioned on behalf of a generator for a three year PPA back in November 2012. Most renewable technologies are represented amongst the independent generators and they range in size from 85 kW right up to 42 MW.

The current e-POWER auction began on Tuesday 28th January with a record 19 suppliers taking part. After a highly competitive auction with an average of 11 bids made per site contracts were awarded to a total of 12 successful bidders. The contracts are for electricity to be produced in the main for the summer 2014 period between 1st April 2014 and 30th September 2014.

From this week's auction the average price for ROC inclusive projects was 10.09p/kWh (up 4% on the same period last year) and 5.04p/kWh for those technologies which do not receive ROCs (down 3.8% on the same period last year).

The average prices by technology band are shown below:

Technology Band Average Price p/kWh ("live" generating stations)
Hydro 9.96
Landfill Gas 10.10
MIW (Waste Incin) 4.95
CHP (Waste Incin) 5.25

The next auction will be held on 8th July 2014. Information on the renewable electricity to be auctioned will be available to registered suppliers.

e-POWER offers generators a unique route to the UK electricity supply base whilst it gives suppliers an easy 'One Stop Shop' for the purchase of renewable power.

Cornwall Energy analysis of e-POWER auction results
Sites achieve 98% of full market value

Cornwall Energy have produced some interesting analysis of the last three e-POWER auctions, please click here to download and view the report - Adobe Reader is required to view, please click here to download Adobe Reader.

Their analysis shows that compared with typical short term bilateral PPAs that might offer 85% to 95% of full market value, generating sites in the latest e-POWER auction achieved an average of 98.1%. The results were very similar too for the previous two auctions (98.0% and 95.9%).

Suppliers are increasingly finding the e-POWER auction a convenient place to buy power with 17 taking part this time compared to 14 in the last auction.

This clearly demonstrates that the e-POWER auction represents a truly liquid market mechanism for the trading of short term PPAs.

Next e-POWER Auction

The next scheduled e-POWER auction is due to be held on 28th January 2014.
