What Are Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs)?

REGOs are issued and governed by Ofgem, which manages the REGO scheme for generation in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  Since 2021 the EU no longer recognises UK REGOs, with the EU Member States version of the REGO scheme called Guarantees of Origin (GoOs).

Once issued, REGOs can be traded with or without the electricity to which it was issued.  This allows suppliers to state that a certain proportion of their electricity has been generated from renewable sources, even if the actual electricity is from a mix of sources, but with the assurance to consumers that the electricity purchased has been matched with renewable generation.

Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) are certificates in the UK energy market that certify electricity as generated from renewable sources. Each REGO represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity and allows energy suppliers to prove the share of renewable energy in their overall supply mix, while helping consumers make informed choices by providing transparency around renewable sourcing.

BUYERS

If you need to evidence the renewable origin of your electricity,  whether for green tariffs, carbon reporting, or corporate sustainability targets, our marketplace provides a straightforward way to source Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) directly from UK renewable generators.

Ahead of each auction round, you will be invited to enrol, giving you access to a wide network of UK renewable generators offering REGOs. Our platform brings together electricity producers and certificate buyers in a single, transparent trading environment.

Once registered, you will be issued secure login details that allow you to enter the auction system and view the REGO volumes and generating sites available for purchase.

When the auction opens, you can place bids on REGOs from individual renewable projects. This allows you to build a portfolio of certificates that aligns with your electricity supply, sustainability targets, or reporting requirements.

Bidding opens once the auction goes live at 10am on the day of the auction. The bidding window lasts 30 minutes, and if no higher bids are placed, the lot will be awarded. In cases of high competitive bidding, the auction may roll over into the following day. The auction will close once no further bids are received.

If you secure REGOs in an auction, you will receive a single invoice covering the full value of all successful lots. Once payment has been received, the certificates will be transferred to you

We manage the commercial and administrative relationship with all participating generators, so you only need to deal with a single counterparty through our platform.

SELLERS

If you operate a renewable electricity asset such as wind, solar, hydro, biomass, tidal, or geothermal, you can earn additional revenue by selling the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) linked to your generation.

Our platform enables generators to bring their REGOs to market through a competitive auction process, supported by our specialist trading and client services team.

If you have REGOs available, we can offer them for sale through our online auction, where a wide range of suppliers and corporate buyers compete to purchase certificates in one central marketplace.

To get started, you simply enter into our Agency Agreement, which authorises us to market your REGOs. Before each auction, we contact you to confirm the volumes you wish to put forward for sale.

Your REGOs are transferred electronically to our Ofgem account, ready to be listed in the auction, and a reserve price is agreed with you in advance. REGOs can be sold for current and previous production periods, subject to Ofgem rules.

Buyers review the available certificates and place bids through the online auction platform. Once your REGOs are successfully sold, we collect payment from the buyer and settle with you, typically within around seven days of the auction closing. You do not need to manage multiple counterparties as we handle the full sales and settlement process for you.

Get Started Selling Your REGOs

If you operate a renewable generation site, you can generate additional revenue by selling the REGOs linked to your electricity output. Suppliers and organisations purchase these certificates to support green tariffs and sustainability reporting. Our online auction platform provides a simple and efficient way for generators and buyers to trade REGOs in one marketplace.

REGOs FAQs

REGOs are issued to accredited renewable electricity generators in the UK, including wind farms, solar parks, hydro stations, biomass plants, and other eligible renewable technologies. For every megawatt hour of renewable electricity generated, a REGO is issued to the generator.

Generators can sell their REGOs separately from their electricity, creating an additional revenue stream alongside power sales. These certificates are commonly sold through energy trading platforms or specialist marketplaces that connect generators with suppliers and organisations seeking to verify the renewable origin of their electricity.

REGOs are purchased by electricity suppliers, businesses, and organisations that want to demonstrate the renewable nature of their electricity consumption. They are widely used for green tariffs, carbon reporting, sustainability disclosures, and renewable energy claims.

Energy suppliers use REGOs to label tariffs as renewable, while corporate buyers use them to support environmental commitments and reporting frameworks such as Scope 2 emissions.

REGO prices are determined by market supply and demand and are typically much lower than subsidy based certificates such as ROCs. Values can vary depending on the type of generator, the age of the asset, and market conditions.

Prices are usually quoted per megawatt hour of renewable generation and are influenced by how many REGOs are available and how much demand exists from suppliers and corporate buyers.

By selling REGOs, renewable generators can earn additional income on top of their electricity sales. Although individual REGO prices are relatively low, they provide a useful supplementary revenue stream, especially for large or long-established generating sites.

Selling REGOs also allows generators to monetise the environmental value of their output, even when their electricity is sold into the standard wholesale market.

Demand for REGOs is expected to grow as more organisations commit to net zero targets and renewable electricity sourcing. As sustainability reporting and transparency requirements increase, REGOs continue to play an important role in proving the renewable origin of electricity.

While REGOs do not directly fund new renewable projects, they remain a key tool for tracking and verifying renewable electricity usage across the UK energy market.

Generators can improve REGO returns by accessing competitive marketplaces that expose their certificates to a wide range of buyers. Selling through an auction or trading platform allows prices to be set by market demand rather than fixed bilateral deals.

Working with a specialist intermediary also helps ensure REGOs are marketed efficiently, transferred correctly through Ofgem, and settled quickly once sold.
